Kinja'd!!! Kinja'd!!! Kinja'd!!!

Saw this burnt out car yesterday while I was at the CVS, it was parked directly next to a school. According to the smells I was getting, the fire hadn’t been put out that long before I hit the scene.

Pour one out for this V8, RWD, body-on-frame King.

As long as we have burnt cars, someone tell me what this one is/was:

One of those Mercedes SLK things?

Seems like a decent guess. The headlight openings definitely felt Mercedes-ish to me, though the front of the hood felt off, but that might just be a result of the grill/bumper burning away.

SLK? Not sure if the right gen, though.

So do we think the impact with the trunk somehow caused the engine fire, or do we think they rammed it to push it out of the center of the street?

No clue. But the lack of debris or burn marks leads me to believe the car moved to that spot under its own power. Whether or not the car was on fire when it got there is whole different question.

Wonder if a protestor mistook it for an unmarked police car?

Cause could have been the cruise control cutoff switch.

It was a switch that was activated by the pressure in the brake line hydraulics, and there was a massive recall for mid 90s vehicles, but they supposedly used the same switch until 2004.

But a parked vehicle starting on fire with no warning was the exact symptom of a leaky cruise control cutoff switch.

I was wondering if there was some kind of known defect that leads to Panthers self-immolating and it looks like there is!

Thoughts on the smashed in trunk? Just a coincidence and the kind of jabroni that doesn’t take his car in for safety recalls is the same kind of dummy that drives around with a bashed in trunk?

The fire definitely looks like it was limited to the rear and sides of the engine bay. That would include the cruise control switch, but there are a lot of wires in that area that could also short out.

Also, interesting to note, the recall was an addition of some sort of fuse, not replacing the cruise control switch. My ‘96 CVPI had the recall, but it still started leaking on me a few months later. Also, I’m not sure if the later Vics were part of the recall, or how effective that extra wiring would be to prevent the fire .

As for the smashed trunk? I dunno... It doesn’t necessarily have to be related, but maybe it could have jarred things loose. It could also be owned by a kid who didn’t have enough money to repair it yet.
